The Canadian Armed Forces took delivery of large numbers of the Northrop F-5 Freedom Fighter which was re-designated the CF5 for operations in Canada’s defence. The F5 was built in both single and two seat versions with the latter being used predominantly in the training role in Canada.

The CF5 was based across the country with active defence Squadrons as well as with the training and experimental duties at CFB Namao and Cold Lake, predominantly in the 1970s. The CF5 was used for active interceptions and deployed to support Canadian peacekeeping missions with the UN to Europe, Cyprus and was frequently seen in both the UK and German during the heyday of its operations throughout the 1970s.

The type was withdrawn from active Canadian Forces service through the mid 1990s having been replaced with CF18s and Hawks, but the CF5 was an extremely capable and well respected aircraft by air and ground crews alike. It was also a very good looking aircraft and was a popular build for plastic modellers.

We hope you enjoy the Canadian Armed Forces CF5 images taken by Dr. John Blatherwick. Thank you very much for visiting this page, and enjoy!

Between the mid 1940s and the late 1980s the Royal Canadian Air Force and Canadian Armed Forces operated a fleet of several hundred different airframes of the C-47 over the passing decades.

The reliable transports were based from coast to coast, with major bases including CFB Cold Lake, CFB Winnipeg, and CFB Shearwater, in addition to overseas assignments supporting Canadian troops in our NATO commitments at bases with Europe, primarily in the UK, France and Germany.

Many of the aircraft were built by Douglas of Santa Monica during World War II, and after their retirement from Canadian military duty a good number of the C-47 Dakotas were sold into the civil market operating for smaller Canadian airlines. The C-47 aircraft were operated under several divisions including Rescue, Air Training Command, Maritime Command, and Mobile Command.

Most of these lovely images were taken by Dr. John Blatherwick during his Canadian travels in the 1970s.

Henry Tenby has been collecting aircraft slides since the early 1980s, and has amassed the collection of NASA flight test development aircraft slides in his collection as presented on this page.

Dr. John Blatherwick

The RCAF and later the Canadian Armed Forces and Canadian Army operated a colourful mixture of helicopters between the 1960s and 1980s. Dr. John Blatherwick was a keen slide photographer during this very interesting period and was lucky to photography many of the rotor wing types in the Canadian defence inventory of the era.

In the late 1960s the RCAF retired iconic types like the Hiller CH112, Piaseki H-21A Flying Banana, the Sikorsky H19 and the Sikorsky H34 which were mainstays of the RCAF Rescue squadrons since the early to mid 1950s. They were replaced by the Sea King, CH113A Labrador and Chinook, and in the late 1960s and 1970s the Canadian Armed Forces added the venerable Bell Twin Huey, and the Bell 206 Kiowa, all of which Dr. Blatherwick photographed at places like CFB Namao, CFB Shearwater, Halifax and the Abbotsford Airshow in the early 1970s. We hope you enjoy the fine selection of images presented here.
