AIR TO AIR - Ultimate Airline Photography

AIR TO AIR – Ultimate Airline Photography 170 pages all colour book by Henry Tenby:

Henry Tenby has put together a book far greater than the limitations of its compact landscape format would imply. It provides 171 air-to-air studies of post-war classic propliners and jet airliners with fascinating captions relating why, how, and where the image was taken. Read assiduously, the content is worthy of close scrutiny wherein lie many lessons for erstwhile aspirants to the magic arts of real photography.
David Baker, Editor, Aviation News Magazine, St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex, UK

Picked up a nice little book today at the Aviation MegaStore near Amsterdam IAP, “Air-to-Air” by Henry Tenby. The book opens with a dedication to Stephen Piercey, a good start, and a clue for the content: a massive amount of propliners and OldJets. Besides loads of photographs, the captions are very informative and bring back memories to airlines and thier hardware plus we get to know some ace air-to-air photographers as well. With a modest price, you cannot go wrong with this one in my opinion.
Just to make sure, as a disclaimer, I have no interest in the book nor the author.

Passenger air travel specially in Britain boomed dramatically throughout the 1960s. The UK’s State owned international air carrier was BOAC British Overseas Airways Corporation, and like many nationalized industries at the time, efficiencies of private enterprise proved difficult to compete with during these times of massive air travel expansion.

By the early 1970s it became apparent that something had to be done and the decision was made for extensive amalgamation of the larger air carriers in the UK. The short haul domestic BEA was combined with even smaller feeder carriers and BEA along with BOAC were joined to become British Airways. The images presented here are from the slide collection of Henry Tenby.

At the time BOAC and British Airways operated a fleet largely made up of UK designer airliners including Viscounts, Vanguards, Tridents, BAC One Elevens, VC-10s, which ar also complemented by US built 707s and 747s for the long haul services.

The RCAF Fleet of a dozen CC-106 Canadair Yukons were replaced with a fleet of five Boeing 707 intercontinental jetliners, which were originally ordered by Western Airlines. The Boeing 707s were delivered in 1970 and the Yukons were retired in 1970-1971 and placed into storage for onward sale at Saskatoon airport.

From the start, the Canadian Forces Boeing 707s were used on the military’s trans-Canada thrice weekly milk-runs as well as on regular trans-Atlantic flights between CFB Trenton and Ottawa Uplands with the CFB base in Lahr, Germany. The 707s also served as government and VIP transports.

From the outset the Canadian Armed Forces Boeing 707s were configurable as air-to-air tankers and were used to take fighter jets between Canada and Europe on an ongoing basis. The CF5s and CF18s were routinely refuelled from these aircraft, during times of peace and during times of war.

The Canadian Forces Boeing 707 was frequently used by Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau on his overseas travels, notably on his visit to Red China in the early 1970s. The 707 served Canada’s military contingent based at Doha, Qatar during the Gulf War in the early 1990s, as well as during Canada’s peace-keeping duties during the Yugoslav – Bosnian conflict of the mid 1990s. All in all the fleet of five Boeing 707s had a stellar service record with the Canadian Armed Forces during their quarter century of service, up until their sale to the US Air Force as J-Stars surveillance platforms in the mid to late 1990s.

The Canadian Armed Forces Boeing 707-347CH CC-137 fleet was as follows:

13701
13702
13703
13704
13705

We hope you enjoy the Canadian Armed Forces Boeing 707 CC-137 images taken by Dr. John Blatherwick. Thank you very much for visiting this page, and enjoy!

Beirut or Bust Another 707 Adventure by Henry Tenby https://www.henrytenby.com/beirut-or-bust-another-707-adventure-by-henry-tenby/ Wed, 07 Jan 2015 06:33:54 +0000 http://www.henrytenby.com/?p=1695 Beirut or Bust Another 707 Adventure by Henry Tenby
Airways Magazine, May-June 1995

Having flown several sectors on LAP Paraguay’s Boeing 707 in 1992, I was determined to visit Beirut and experience MEA’s Boeing 707 and 720 operation first hand. At the time, Lebanon’s flag carrier MEA (Middle East Airlines) was the world’s largest operator of Boeing 707 and 720 classics.

Having established contact with the airline via representatives at their Toronto Sales office, and plans were set for me to spend a few days visiting the airline to document their operation. In September of 1994, the best MEA 707 flight options into Beirut were from Istanbul and Athens, and it was more convenient for me travel on Swissair to Athens via Zurich to start the trip.

During my three days in Beirut, MEA’s public relation manager assisted me in interviewing and photographing extensively. I was also able to shoot video of my visit which is available as a top selling aviation DVD. It was also an interesting time to visit Beirut, as the civil war had recently ended and the remnants of that conflict were widespread.

One of the highlights of the visit was my invitation to the Beirut airport control tower exterior patio to watch an MEA Boeing 720 bash the circuit during a crew training session. It was magical, and the whole visit is documented in detail in the following article.

Paraguayan Pleasures: Latin America’s Last Passenger 707 https://www.henrytenby.com/paraguayan-pleasures-latin-americas-last-passenger-707/ Wed, 07 Jan 2015 06:05:09 +0000 http://www.henrytenby.com/?p=1687 Paraguayan Pleasures: Latin America’s Last Passenger 707, by Henry Tenby
Airliners Magazine, Sept-Oct 1994

In 1992, along with a friend I made a special trip down to South America specially to fly on the classic jetliners operated by the flag carrier of Paraguay, Lineas Aereas Paraguayas.

Our first leg was Toronto to Rio on a VARIG DC-10, where we purchased our LAP tickets for our circular route to Asuncion, Santiago and Buenos Aires which included flights on LAP’s DC-10, DC-8-63, and the main draw, their Boeing 707-320, which was a former Pan Am machine.

The entire journey was documented in great detail on the pages of the following article which appeared in Airliners magazine. Of course the LAP 707 and DC-8 operation is now ancient history, but this article takes us back to a time when such amazing journeys were still possible, for the motivated flight hounds of the day.

CHECK OUT my LAP 707 and LAP DC-8 DVDs.
