This all colour book features 100 pages of British warbirds photographed by Dave Lawrence with captions explaining the airfield and date, making this book an interesting snap shot of the classic warbird scene in Britain during the 1960s.

The 1960s was an interesting period for British warbirds. World War II was only 20 years in the past, and iconic British combat aircraft from the conflict were in greater abundance than today.

Fabulous marques like the Supermarine Spitfire, Hawker Hurricane and Sea Fury, Avro Lancaster, De Havilland Mosquito and many others were somewhat common at British airfields during the 1960s, and a young RAF pilot named Dave Lawrence was fortunate enough to photograph many of these aircraft throughout the decade.

The photos in this book were taken at British air fields including Cranfield, Staverton, Finningly, Abingdon, Little Rissington, Church Fenton, Chivenor, Binbrook and many others.

From the mid 1970s until early 1992, VARIG Airlines operated a fleet of Lockheed L-188 Electras on the Ponte Aerea Air Bridge connecting Rio’s Santos Dumont Airport with Sao Paulo’s Congonhas airport.

Captions are extensive and informative, often including details of the photography session such as location and crew names, chase plane, as well as revealing how the shot was captured. For a very modest price, here is a treasure trove of excellent and unusual colour photography of airliners from around the world.

Henry Tenby has put together a book far greater than the limitations of its compact landscape format would imply. It provides 171 air-to-air studies of post-war classic propliners and jet airliners with fascinating captions relating why, how, and where the image was taken. Read assiduously, the content is worthy of close scrutiny wherein lie many lessons for erstwhile aspirants to the magic arts of real photography.

Picked up a nice little book today at the Aviation MegaStore near Amsterdam IAP, “Air-to-Air” by Henry Tenby. The book opens with a dedication to Stephen Piercey, a good start, and a clue for the content: a massive amount of propliners and OldJets. Besides loads of photographs, the captions are very informative and bring back memories to airlines and thier hardware plus we get to know some ace air-to-air photographers as well. With a modest price, you cannot go wrong with this one in my opinion.
